The study day dedicated to the work of Antonino Cardillo is part of the series ‘La giovane architettura’, a cycle of events curated by Professor Antonio Biancucci, with Salvatore Oddo. The event, hosted by the Department of Architecture at the University of Palermo, aims to explore new approaches to architecture, combining design excellence, an ‘Italian’ perspective rooted in context, and a vision open to the global panorama.

Introduction

Antonio Biancucci

This event concludes a series of lectures aimed at offering our students diverse approaches to the profession of architecture, considered in its broadest and most significant dimension. I deemed it essential to invite architect Cardillo to close this series, as he represents a unique and original figure within the Sicilian landscape. His presence embodies an experimental and innovative approach, which is the central theme of this program. While young in age, I would like to clarify that the concept of ‘young architecture’ does not simply refer to chronological age but rather an attitude of research, curiosity, and experimentation that Cardillo has exemplified. Cardillo is a Sicilian architect who trained at this school but has developed his professional career predominantly on an international level, gaining significant visibility and recognition beyond his homeland. Among the most intriguing aspects of his work is the creation of an imaginary landscape comprised of unrealised projects, which suggest an alternative and transfigured vision of contemporary architecture. Among the first, he delved into digital representation and the construction of virtual worlds, achieving significant international recognition and initiating collaborations and professional commissions, including the realisation of a house in Japan. Noteworthy is his career, which, initially focused on organic and contemporary themes, has evolved over the years into a reflection on classical architecture and the system of rules. Fascinating is his connection with Sir John Soane, with significant interventions at the Sir John Soane’s Museum in London, one of the most extraordinary pieces of architecture globally. Some of his works will soon be published in prestigious magazines like Casabella, gaining further recognition from critics and peers. Cardillo maintains a strong bond with the Trapani area, where he has executed works such as the famous Mammacaura, successfully blending local identity themes in an international context. His architecture offers significant responses to a confusing time like the one we live in. I encourage everyone to learn more about his works through available publications and to actively participate in the discussion following his presentation. I now hand over to architect Antonino Cardillo.

Lecture

Antonino Cardillo

I was born in 1975, as Pink Floyd were recording Shine On You Crazy Diamond. This song, dedicated to absence, embodies a dimension of emptiness that characterised the 1970s. I start with this reflection because every life, every experience, is partly shaped by the circumstances in which it takes form. In my case, these circumstances were the 1970s, the city of Trapani in Sicily, and a persistent sense of estrangement from the place where I was born. It felt as if I did not belong to that context, a feeling I might describe as a perceived distance between myself and my surroundings. […]

Farewell

Antonietta Iolanda Lima

[…] I would like to conclude by recalling the first meeting between Antonio[1] and me. It was in the main lecture hall of the Faculty of Architecture in Via Maqueda, Palermo. I still seem to see him: the hall was overcrowded, even the windows were filled with young students. I began speaking, and I remember him, already handsome back then. He immediately caught my attention. Antonio started provocatively, and gradually his presence revealed itself as constant and significant. This has been Antonio since the beginning. I do not wish to add more, except to express how profoundly pleased I am with his journey, which has brought him into the wider world. And I am grateful that he has recognised our bond, even though in reality we have never lost touch. Throughout our paths, his and mine, there has always been a deep connection. Thus, I thank Antonio. […]
