DuMont Sizilien

Review

For the 5th edition of the DuMont Reise-Handbuch, authors Eva Gründel and Heinz Tomek conducted extensive research in Sicily. Besides famous ancient temples, Norman cathedrals, and Baroque palaces, they discovered modern architectural marvels such as Antonino Cardillo’s Specus Corallii in Trapani and Giuseppe Gurrieri’s Ecò Bar in Ragusa. Sicily offers a diverse range of historical and natural attractions, including hiking trails on Mount Etna. The guide covers all notable regions and cities, from Palermo to Etna, Europe’s highest active volcano.

Specus Corallii

Architect Antonio Cardillo primarily works with symmetry and surfaces. His recent project, a former oratory transformed into a concert hall, is designed as a ‘coral cave’: Trapani sandstone on the lower part of the walls, volcanic ash plaster above, and two chestnut wood doors, all in warm brown-pink tones.
